It was an honour to speak at the G20 Interfaith Summit today in Buenos Aires. The panel focused on the rising tensions between religious freedom and anti-discrimination norms.

We discussed the embemati c case of our times: “The Cake”! If a baker refuses to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, on the grounds of ‘freedom of conscience’, what to do?

Essentially, two basic rights of individuals are colliding: the right to freedom of religion or belief and the right to equality and non-discrimination. Courts have to make the impossible choice of choosing either freedom or equality.

As the legal community wrestles with this around the globe, I say that we must find a solution where we can maximise both rights. Basically, we must find a way to have our cake AND eat it !!
